Colleen Spier Appointed Provincial Court Judge in Nanaimo

June 29, 2025 – We are honoured to recognize Judge Spier, a proud Métis-Cree woman whose life and career reflect a deep commitment to Indigenous justice and community. After graduating from UBC’s Allard School of Law in 2007, she began her legal journey as a judicial clerk with the Provincial Court. She went on to build a respected practice in family law, child protection, and mediation—earning the Susanna Jani Award for excellence in mediation in 2022.

Judge Spier has been a tireless advocate for Indigenous peoples throughout her career. As BC’s Assistant Deputy Minister of the Indigenous Justice Secretariat, she led transformative work to advance Indigenous justice initiatives, including the development of Indigenous sentencing courts and the creation of culturally based, community-driven supports. Her leadership directly supported organizations such as the Native Courtworker and Counselling Association of BC (NCCABC), recognizing the essential role of Indigenous-led services in addressing systemic barriers.

Her contributions have been acknowledged with significant honours, including her appointment as King’s Counsel in 2023 and the awarding of the King Charles III Coronation Medal in 2025. These recognitions speak not only to her legal expertise but to the cultural insight, compassion, and integrity she brings to every role.

We celebrate her appointment to the bench—not only as a milestone in her accomplished career, but as a meaningful step toward a more culturally responsive and inclusive justice system. Judge Spiers’ leadership and her connection to Indigenous communities will continue to shape a more equitable path forward for all.
