August 12, 2025 – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our colleague and friend, Janet Baker, on July 31, 2025.
Janet began her career as a Native Courtworker with the Native Courtworker and Counselling Association of BC on May 25, 1975, and for over 40 years she dedicated herself to advocating for Indigenous rights and supporting countless community members.
A tireless champion for justice, she was both a fearless voice for her people and a source of warmth and care.
Born to her late parents, Anna (née Doss) and Arthur Thevarge, Janet grew up in Darcy, BC. She was a survivor of the residential school system, having attended St. Mary’s Residential School and Saint Thomas Aquinas Day School.
She will be deeply missed by her children, family, and all who had the privilege of working alongside her.
