INDIGENOUS DETOX SUPPORT WORKERS PROGRAM

LOCATED IN VANCOUVER

PURPOSE

Indigenous Detox Support Workers Program can help clients achieve a healthier and satisfying life free from alcohol and drug use. This is an important part of our mission to improve health outcomes to Indigenous people living in the Vancouver area. Our Indigenous Detox Support Workers connect with Indigenous clients through coordination with Vancouver Coastal Health Withdrawal Management Services. The client is typically connected to the Indigenous Detox Support Worker, while they are attending detox.

PROCESS

Step 1:

  • If a client is exiting the Withdrawal Management Services, we will set up an “Initial Meeting”.

Step 2:

  • The client and worker develop the Client Action Plan, and the plan is made to be suitable to your personal needs.
  • This plan helps the client build appropriate personal support networks and connect with community.
  • The plan consists of connecting the client with resources for shelter or housing, food, and other basic issues that clients face after detox.
  • As well, we connect clients with drug and alcohol counselling, Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, Narcotics Anonymous meetings, and sponsors.

HOW WE CAN HELP:

  • Once we have connected with you, we will make sure you receive the help you need to achieve good health.
  • Be connected to appropriate community support agencies.
  • Receive assistance in developing a client treatment and/or aftercare plan. This will help you identify any issues and needs for implementing the plan, and orient you to appropriate addictions and community services such as justice related services, traditional healing, residential treatment programs, day treatment and support services. Resources in implementing your treatment/aftercare plans.
  • Be provided Assertive Community Treatment, a method that allows you to process change through appropriate support, helping you meet your goals, address your addiction issues, and improve your quality of life.
  • Be connected with other services at each stage of the treatment/aftercare process.
  • Be given the opportunity to be part of client peer support and educational groups.
  • Receive on-going follow up, and together we will adjust the plan as needed.

ELDER PARTICIPATION

The Vancouver Alcohol and Drug Outpatient Services office involved the participation of Indigenous Elders provide us with enormous support. Many of them play a vital role by sharing their teachings, providing guidance on advisory committees, and by connecting with community partners and stakeholders. We are always mindful of our Elders because they embody our mission, “A Helping Hand to Justice”.
